Gutter installation in the Birmingham area typically costs $12 to $25 per linear foot, or $2,200 to $5,000 for an average home, according to HomeGuide's October 2025 gutter installation guide, with gutter guards adding $15 to $45 per linear foot and downspouts $30 to $75 each. Gutters matter at the foundation as much as at the roof: an inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is about 623 gallons, and without gutters and downspouts that water lands along the walls. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give the Birmingham airport station 56.62 inches of rain a year. BDry Alabama installs gutters and guards to move roof water away from the house, and a free inspection sets the exact price.

NOAA's 1991 to 2020 climate normals give the Birmingham airport station 56.62 inches of rain a year, and 17.7 days with an inch or more. On one of those days, a 2,000 square foot roof sheds about 1,250 gallons, and gutters gather all of it into a handful of downspouts. If a downspout ends at the wall, that water is concentrated at the foundation instead of spread across the yard. Gutters that overflow during a storm, washed out mulch under the roof edge, or soggy soil next to the house are the signs that roof water is going to the wrong place. Fixing that is usually the least expensive water management step a house can get.
Gutter installation in the Birmingham area typically costs $12 to $25 per linear foot with labor and materials, or $2,200 to $5,000 for an average home, according to HomeGuide's October 2025 gutter installation guide. HomeGuide puts a 1,500 square foot single story home at $1,800 to $3,800 and a 2,500 square foot home at $2,400 to $5,000, and says most homes have about one linear foot of gutter for every 10 square feet. Aluminum, the most common choice, runs $10 to $20 per foot installed. Two story homes add $1 to $3 or more per foot, gutter guards add $15 to $45, and each downspout runs $30 to $75. BDry Alabama measures the roofline at a free inspection and gives you one written price, with financing available.
For most homes, yes. Seamless gutters are formed on site from a coil to the length of each roof run, so the long straight sections have no joints, and joints are where sectional gutters usually start to leak. HomeGuide's November 2025 seamless gutter guide lists fewer leaks and clogs and a longer life as the main benefits, says seamless gutters last 20 to 50 years depending on material, and says sectional gutters typically begin to leak after 3 to 5 years. It prices seamless aluminum at $6 to $12 per linear foot installed, or about $900 to $2,400 for 150 to 200 feet on a one story home, while its October 2025 installation guide says seamless gutters cost $3 to $5 or more per foot over sectional ones. The two guides measure differently, so use them as planning ranges and compare written quotes.
Mostly, but not all of them equally. HomeGuide's February 2026 gutter guard guide says most manufacturers state their products work in heavy rain, yet customer reports indicate some reverse curve and fine mesh guards do not perform as well in a downpour, because fast falling water can run off the cover instead of into the gutter. That matters in a place where NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give the Birmingham airport station 17.7 days a year with an inch of rain or more. HomeGuide puts professionally installed guards at $3,000 to $9,000 for 200 linear feet, and lifespans run from 2 to 5 years for foam up to 10 to 20 years or more for perforated aluminum and reverse curve covers. Guards cut down on cleaning without ending it, and HomeGuide notes most experts still recommend a cleaning at least once a year.
Farther than most do. The 2021 International Residential Code, Section R801.3, requires roof water to discharge "not less than 5 feet from foundation walls" or into an approved drainage system wherever expansive or collapsible soils are known to exist, and HomeGuide's February 2026 drainage guide recommends a gutter drainage system that carries water 10 feet or more from the house. A downspout that ends at the wall concentrates the whole roof's runoff at one spot on the foundation. HomeGuide puts an above ground extension at $5 to $25 and a downspout buried and piped to a pop up emitter or dry well at $150 to $350. The right spot is downhill and away from the house, where the water can soak in or flow off without pooling, eroding a bed or running onto a neighbor's lot.
Yes. An inch of rain on 1,000 square feet of roof is about 623 gallons, and gutters gather all of it into a few downspouts. When a gutter overflows or a downspout ends at the wall, that water soaks the soil right against the foundation, where it pushes on basement walls, wets crawl spaces and feeds the clay that swells and shrinks under footings. NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals give the Birmingham airport station 56.62 inches of rain a year to repeat the cycle. BDry Alabama's waterproofing warranties do not cover leaks from above grade sources such as gutters, which is why the gutters and downspouts are checked at every water inspection. Fixing roof water first often costs far less than anything below grade.
Most homes use 5 inch K style gutters, according to HomeGuide's October 2025 gutter installation guide, and homes with large roof areas or in heavy rainfall regions may need 6 inch gutters, which add $1 to $2 per linear foot. HomeGuide warns that undersized gutters overflow during heavy rain, which defeats their purpose, and that a professional can size the system from the roof's square footage, pitch and local rainfall intensity. Downspout count matters as much as gutter width: HomeGuide's November 2025 seamless gutter guide says an average home needs four to five downspouts, roughly one every 30 to 40 feet. A long run with one downspout at the end, or a steep roof valley dumping into one corner, overflows long before the gutter itself is full.
It depends on the material. HomeGuide's October 2025 gutter installation guide says vinyl gutters typically last 10 to 15 years, aluminum 20 to 25 years with proper maintenance, steel 20 to 30 years, and copper or zinc often longer than 50 years. Signs it is time to replace rather than repair include cracks, holes or rust, gutters pulling away from the fascia, sagging sections even when empty, water stains on the siding below, and peeling paint under the roofline. HomeGuide puts a typical gutter repair at $100 to $450 and says that when gutters are more than 20 years old or have several problems, replacement is often the better value. Rotted fascia behind the gutter has to be fixed first, at $5 to $12 per linear foot, or the new gutters will not hold.
HomeGuide's November 2025 seamless gutter guide says pros recommend cleaning gutters twice a year to prevent clogging and repairs, and puts a professional cleaning at $100 to $250. Even with guards, HomeGuide's February 2026 gutter guard guide says most experts recommend at least an annual cleaning. Around Birmingham the timing matters: leaves drop in fall, just ahead of the December to March wet season, when NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals put 14.85 inches of winter rain on the Birmingham airport station plus 5.66 inches in March. Gutters that go into winter full of leaves overflow onto already saturated soil. The BDry Elite Silver plan includes a visual inspection of the gutters at each of its two yearly visits, and the Gold plan, at $595 a year or $59 a month, adds two gutter cleanings a year.
Often it is the cleanest way to get roof water well away from the house, especially where an extension would cross a walkway or the lawn. HomeGuide's February 2026 drainage guide prices an underground downspout drain at $150 to $350 per downspout, including the catch basin, trenching, drain pipe and a pop up emitter, against $5 to $25 for an above ground extension. A buried line needs enough fall to keep water moving and an outlet that stays clear, because leaves and grit that get past the gutter can collect in the pipe. A screen or guard at the top helps. BDry Alabama covers downspouts for one year as part of its exterior drainage warranty; clogs are not covered, since those lines need periodic cleaning. In dense clay, piping to daylight is usually more reliable than a dry well.
Call BDry Alabama at 205 942 1976 or send the form, Monday through Friday from 7 in the morning to 6 in the evening. Photos of overflowing gutters, stained siding or soggy spots near the house during a storm help us see the problem before we arrive. At the visit we check the gutters, the guards if you have them, every downspout and where it ends, and the ground and foundation below. You get the gutter, guard and downspout plan with one written price, and if moving a downspout fixes the problem, that is what we recommend. For scale, HomeGuide's October 2025 guide puts a full gutter installation at $2,200 to $5,000 for an average home, while a splash block or extension runs $10 to $50 per downspout.
